**** A 30-Year Look Back
My perspective in 1996 when I started spec-online.com (later renamed to 4specs.com) was that the number of people writing specs and making manufacturer and product decisions was fairly small. They worked primarily with 3-ring binders for product information their entire spec-writing career. On your website they wanted to find detailed product information to make specification decisions.
In 1996 CSI Specifier published my article entitled Deliver Your Product Information Using the Internet.
In 1997 CSI published a second article entitled Developing Your Construction Product Website.
Much of the information in these articles is still valid today, almost 30 years later. The major missing elephant is Google.
I followed these articles with WebFormat, a suggested design for a commercial product website.
