Who Wants to Sell Disruption?

When to Call Bullsh*t on the Technology Hype

About the Author: With over 30 years of industry experience, Doug Bevill is a professional business strategist who specializes in consulting with building product manufacturers on strategy.

In today's BIM - and AI-driven world, tech companies are overflowing with futurist spin doctors wielding acronym-heavy vocabularies—LLM, CPU, GPU, SaaS, and more - promising to "disrupt" and "de-silo" the commercial construction industry.

But let's pause and consider the word disruption:

Synonyms include: disturbance, disorder, interference, confusion, disarray.

Not exactly positive, right?

Earlier in my career as a market analyst and manufacturing executive, I never heard disruption used in a constructive context:

"I-70 has buckled between Fort Wayne and St. Louis, disrupting traffic for several hours."

Not good.

Then I entered the tech world - and suddenly, I was hearing terms like révolution, blow it up, and yes, disrupt.

Here's the disconnect:

Many of these so-called disruptive tools were created in a vacuum - without meaningful input from the people they claim to serve.

Architects, engineers, spec writers, general contractors, and building product manufacturers have built successful practices by refining their workflows over time. They embrace technology when it adds value, not when it forces unnecessary change or disruption.

The truth is simple:

These professionals don't want to be disrupted.

They want tools that make their current workflows faster, better, and more efficient - without the smoke, mirrors, or unqualified bullsh*t from outside the industry.

And manufacturers?

They want tools that AEC professionals actually use—solutions that make their products easier to find, specify, and purchase.

Product success—or failure—is technology-agnostic.

Firms will make a change only if it truly benefits their business by increasing efficiency.

If not, they'll stick with what works even if it that's MS Word or Excel.

As Phil Bernstein, Deputy Dean and Professor Adjunct at Yale Architecture, wisely put it:

"These developments are all very interesting, but I haven't seen anything that could cause a fundamental disruption in the way architects work. It's very hard to disrupt a profession that can trace its origins to the Enlightenment."

And from The Economist, Sep 7, 2025:

"A recent study by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology finds that 95% of organizations are getting "zero return" from investments in generative AI."

To SaaS startups and spec-tech innovators:

The industry needs your ideas.

Keep building. Keep refining. Keep trying to help.

But remember:

Authenticity and knowledge are the cure for bullsh*t.
